Clearer summary on new resuscitation guidelines

Now the AAP has published a clearer summary of guidelines on resuscitation of the neonate.

It includes the following paragraph:

If responsible physicians believe that the baby has no chance for survival, initiation of resuscitation is not an ethical treatment option and should not be offered. Examples include birth at a confirmed gestational age of less than 22 weeks’ gestation and some congenital malformations and chromosomal anomalies.

In the previous set of guidelines, the number was “23 weeks.” That’s a big difference for us, with our son being born at 22 weeks and 6 days and nearly being denied care.
